I recently had an opportunity to make use of the PGP tutorial that Adam Witthauer and I wrote with Michael W. Dean for the Freedom Feens. Being only an occasional Windows user, I hadn’t tested our instructions outside of Windows XP, and I hit a snag after installing Enigmail. I kept getting an error message: “Failed to initialize Enigmail” Most of the search results referencing that error referred to the path to the GPG binary being set incorrectly. That wasn’t the case in my situation. I’ve lost track of the web pages that helped me figure out a solution, but what wound up clearing things up for me was to install Enigmail globally, rather than in only my user profile.
